Ultrasonographic Findings of Parathyroid Adenoma

Abstract

|
The authors report 3 cases of parathyroid adenoma with review of the literatures. Ultrasonography demonstrated well circumscribed ovoid masses measured 1.3 to 3.6 cm in diameter around the inferior pole of thyroid gland in all cases. 2 cases were homogeneously hypoechoic and one case was inhomogeneously hypoechoic, compared to thyroid gland. All 3 cases were proved pathologically by fine-needle aspiration biopsy under ultrasonic guidence followed by operation. Ultrasonography is a non-invasive, simple method for the localization of pathologically enlarged parathyroid glands in patients with hyperparathyroidism. Ultrasound guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy will increase the diagnostic accuracy in patients with suspected parathyroid tumors.
